Landfills can take hundreds of thousands of years to decompose, and can create long-lasting water and air pollution if not taken care of properly. In 2013, the US put 69% of its waste into landfill. However, we also recycled almost one quarter of our total waste for the year, and composted 7%. Countries such as Austria managed to recycle up to 70% of their wastes, and landfilled less than 5%! This is a huge achievement, and it shows the potential we have in the US to decrease our own air and water pollution. Recycling is a great improvement, but reducing our waste production is the most effective solution. If you want to make a difference, start small. Take reusable water bottles around instead of plastic ones, and next time you finish a soda, recycle it! If you’re interested in doing more to reduce IHS’ waste production, come to a Green Team meeting Monday after school in H-104. Hope to see you there!

Earth Day fact from Green Team: Air pollution is a growing problem worldwide, as nations become more developed with more factories emitting pollutants into the air and more cars being driven. Air pollution is especially problematic in south eastern Asian countries. Air pollution and resulting deaths are increasing fastest in Asia. That’s terrifying, and the problem also exists in the US, as air pollution in California kills an estimated 25,000 people per year and costs $200 million worth of medical expenses. Although air pollution doesn’t seem like such a huge problem at first, it is. The easiest ways to help are to walk or bike whenever possible, and to take public transport, or to carpool. It’s also good to know that the Clean Air Act exists, with a goal of cutting carbon emissions from existing power plants 20 to 30 percent by 2020 (relative to 2012 emission levels).

Welcome to Earth Week, IHS! Get ready for some important info on environmental issues and what you can do to help! In 2013, the U.S. emitted 5,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which when added to the atmosphere in such large quantities, increases the greenhouse effect and leads to climate changes the world over. In order to curb emissions, we need to reduce our use of fossil fuels and use more energy from clean sources! Small steps you can take are turning off lights when you leave a room; walking, carpooling or taking the bus to school; and buying locally-grown food! To start on your way to a bigger action, try finding out your carbon footprint at myfootprint.org or having an energy audit done on your house! Or come to IHS Green Team meetings Mondays after school in H-104 to make a difference in your school and community!
